The classes

Besides learning aikido, how we treat one another is especially important. In class, everyone should feel comfortable: young or old, man or woman, beginner or advanced, supple or stiff. During training you constantly switch partners, so that at one moment you face an enthusiast with whom you work hard on your fitness, and the next someone of a more advanced age, so that you have to work more slowly and with greater concentration. By continually adapting to and taking account of a new aikido partner, you ultimately become more supple not only in body but also in mind.

The outward form

In aikido you learn to respond to strikes, thrusts and grabs to the wrist, elbow or shoulders. Sometimes wooden weapons (knife, sword and staff) are used to learn to work at a greater distance from each other. By moving along with the motion of the attack, the attacker's force is ultimately turned back against themselves. Through circular and spiral movements the techniques often look very graceful. At the end of a technique the attacker is thrown or held under control by means of a joint lock. These locks generally work along the natural direction of movement of the joints. Most of the time you work in pairs. To train for speed, you also practise with multiple attackers.

Discover the magical world of winning without fighting!

Step 1: Take a trial class

You are always welcome for a free trial class. It is enough to let the instructor know before the class starts, so you can get acquainted. Special clothing is not required. Long, comfortable trousers (tracksuit bottoms) and a T-shirt (no vest) are fine. Bring a pair of slippers to walk from the changing room to the hall. (Aikido is practised barefoot.)

Step 2: Register

After your free trial class you can choose to register with our school. You do this simply by filling in the online registration form. All practical information, such as the class times and the fees, can be found on this site. Once you are registered, you are warmly welcome to take part in the classes!

Step 3: Get an aikido suit

The next step is getting an aikido suit (gi). This gives you the freedom of movement and comfort you need during classes. You can buy a gi through us, via a marketplace site or in a shop. In the early stages your trial-class clothing is fine, but we recommend getting your gi within a few weeks of starting.
